The way you buy energy is changing. The price of your electricity will now depend on your usage, the distribution zone you live in and the tariff you’re currently paying.

The Default Market Offer (DMO) is a federal government initiative to make energy prices more affordable for customers.

The Australian Energy Regulator estimates customers in NSW may save between $129 and $181 a year by comparing previous median benchmark standing offer rates for a flat tariff to rates that are compliant with the new default price caps. Customers in south-east Queensland may save $118 a year, while customers in South Australia may save $181 a year.

AGL is committed to making this change easy and transparent for you, our customers. We are standing by to help you understand the new default price and how it compares with your current plan and other AGL market rates.

We’ve got you covered

If you’re an AGL electricity customer on a standing offer, we’ll automatically adjust your rates to ensure they comply with the default price cap from 1 July.

If you’re on an AGL market contract rates on a tariff covered by the DMO, you can ask us to switch you to our standard retail contract on rates compliant with the default price cap at any time.

Otherwise, you may choose to remain on your existing AGL market contract or switch to another AGL market contract, which may give you better value for money than the default price offer.

Making it easier to compare your options

As part of the changes, we’ve changed our electricity plans to help you weigh up your options and choose the best value plan for your home or business.

From 1 July, we’ll no longer offer conditional discounts for customers who pay by direct debit, or who pay on time. We’ve introduced deals with low rates, fixed for two years,  making it easier for you to compare your options and pick the deal that suits you best. And we’ll continue to make it easy for you to pay your bills and manage your account online.

Taking control of your energy usage

AGL offers a range of services to help you manage your energy usage.

For a residential customer with a smart meter and eBilling, AGL Energy Insights is a free service that can help you see where savings can be made by breaking down your electricity bill. It uses weather information, data from your smart meter and information from your Home Profile (if you complete one) to estimate how much power your home uses for things like heating, cooling, lighting, refrigeration and laundry.

Your AGL My Account and the AGL Energy app can provide you with up-to-date information on your energy usage and charges. You can compare your usage patterns across different periods and if you have a smart meter, you can also track your electricity usage and costs within a billing period. You can use your AGL My Account or the AGL Energy app to access self-service meter reads, download and store your bills, make payments and receive alerts when your bills are due.

As an AGL customer, you can also take more control of your bills by choosing the way you pay, with options to suit everyone.
